How to Use AI to Make Your Website Better

Most people have heard of ChatGPT, but how useful is AI in designing websites? AI can be a powerful tool for web designers if you know when and how to use it.

It can often be hard to endeavor in a new skill or project, but having guidance or structure can greatly speed up the process of mastering or completing a project. Today, we’re going to talk about how you can use AI to help you make your website better.

1. Brainstorming

It’s often the case that starting a large project is the hardest part of the project. Knowing where to start can take lots of planning, and that’s where AI comes in. By giving AI a set of instructions/requirements for your website’s needs, etc… it can give you a plan from start to finish, breaking down every problem into bite-sized pieces you can handle.

We recommend that when breaking down a website, ask for it to give a top-down design method of how to approach building the website. The top-down design method is when you define the large problem at hand (building a website) and break it down until you’re left with the simple tasks to solve the problem. It helps, especially in the brainstorming stage, as it lets you see if what you are trying to achieve is reasonable.

2. Templates/snippets of code

When coding in HTML, I find AI’s strong suit to be snippet/template generation. Sure, you may have remembered all the code for setting up a table, but it’s often the case much faster to have AI generate a table for you. You can even ask for it to style a template (such as a table) in specific ways to fit your branding, but there is a limit to how well AI works.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to convey exactly how you want a website to look, and trying to use AI to generate everything can be frustrating if it doesn’t generate exactly how you want it to. That’s when you have to step in as a web designer. Careful with relying on AI too much; otherwise, when it fails, you won’t know how to solve problems when they occur.

3. Integrating different versions of code

Another great use of AI when coding is integrating old and new code. Sometimes it can be a daunting task to remake a large navbar with new styling and classes, or footers with large lists that need to be updated. This is where I find AI shines the most. Giving it simple tasks like “replace all of class ‘X’ with class ‘Y’ for my footer.”

You don’t have to waste your time on a simple task like this and can just offload it to AI. My favorite part is that AI can work while you do too! You can actively be working on other parts of your website while AI does its job, then just come back and copy and paste its work.

4. Unnecessary Code and SEO

One common issue that lowers your SEO is the actual optimization of your code. It is often the case that you have CSS that overlaps, or don’t need as many classes as you have. AI is extremely useful in being able to compile all of your style sheets or HTML documents and optimize the code that runs your website.

AI is a great tool to improve SEO, especially when it comes to written content. It can refine paragraphs to best suit its purposes – and I love using it for CTA (call to action) sections of my website. You simply give it information on your target audience, what type of tone you want it and it will generate the text and how even the layout of your CTA section.

AI isn’t here to replace web designers… yet. It’s here to help empower them and help streamline the design process from start to finish. That said, AI is a tool to help you, not a crutch to rely on. Whether you’re just starting your web design journey or building your 100th website, never forget that your unique vision brings a website to life.
